10 Tips For Creating A Retreat Experience At Home

Attain resort-quality relaxation in your own home during your next self care day.

All high-end hotel properties know luxury exists in the details. At check-in, a signature scent and warm lighting create an ambiance that melts away the stresses from a day of travel. At the root of every memorable stay is the property’s thoughtfulness: cute turndown notes left on pillows by the housekeeping staff; comfy robes and slippers set in each room; and concierge assistance when making reservations at a local restaurant. Give yourself the same special treatment when planning your own self care day at home by incorporating these 10 tips.

  1. Clean up
Before your at-home retreat begins, make sure the space where you plan on spending the most time—whether it’s the bathroom, bedroom, or elsewhere—is spotless. Our moods can be altered by our environments, so if the room feels chaotic, we can expect the same for our mental states. Create a calming place for respite by imagining you are staging a hotel room. For example, make your bed if you typically don’t every morning, and temporarily place everyday items out-of-sight in a drawer so counters are clean. This will help accomplish a spa-like vibe.

  2. Light a calming candle
Continue to set the mood with a soothing candle. Lavender, citrus, peppermint, rosemary and eucalyptus are all go-to scents for attaining a calming aroma. Dim the lights so that the focus can move away from fluorescent bulbs to the softer ambiance a flame creates.

  3. Start the day with your favorite exercise

Whether you like to flow on a yoga mat, run down the block, or attend a spin class, wake your body up with some movement in order to stimulate the release of mood-boosting chemicals in the brain like dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin. Fitness platforms like Freeletics and Orangetheory Fitness offer free, online workout classes that will help get you moving.

  4. Prep some fruit-infused water

Resorts tend to have hydration stations scattered throughout the property with fruit-filled water that’s available to guests. A cucumber- and mint-infused drink makes staying hydrated all the more appealing. Water plays a key role in health and beauty by promoting digestion and anti-aging. By adding lemons, oranges, mint, berries, ginger, and more to H2O, you’re not only making water more flavorful, but you’re also providing your body with important vitamins and minerals sources.

  5. Invest in a comfy robe
After swiping the key to any hotel room, our first matter of business is always locating a plush robe to slip into that tells us we’re officially in vacation mode. But the robe life shouldn’t be limited to hotel stays. Instead, invest in an at-home robe that has the qualities you love most: whether you prefer a terry cloth or silk, maxi or above-the-knees, and long-sleeve or quarter-length. Spend your retreat day lounging in the one you choose.

  6. Put on calming music

Whether you enjoy classical music, sounds of the ocean, or even Brazilian love songs, create a playlist that will help you unwind. Stay away from adding songs you know the words to so that you don’t catch yourself singing along. Rather, compile a playlist of background music that will help you reach a meditative state. If you prefer a guided meditation, the Insight Timer app gives you access to 45,000 free meditations.

  7. Give yourself an at-home facial

Start your treatment by removing any makeup with a towelette. Moisten the skin before using your favorite exfoliant to open the pores before applying a face mask. You can purchase a clay or sheet mask, or you can make one at home using ingredients that are already in the kitchen, like plain yogurt, honey, and egg whites. After 10 to 20 minutes, remove the mask and use a natural jade face roller or sculpting tool to drain water retention and lift the facial muscles. Finally, add your favorite serum and moisturizer to lock in results.

  8. Apply a hair mask

Don’t just treat your skin — give your hair a boost in hydration by leaving in a moisturizing mask, which you can also purchase or make at home using common ingredients like honey, an egg and apple cider vinegar.

  9. Do an at-home mani-pedi

While going to a salon can be relaxing, a nail tech isn’t necessary for a standup manicure. So long as you have clippers, a nail file and some polish, you can give yourself a mani-pedi at home. Start off with the pedicure before moving to your fingernails. Cut the nails to your desired length, and then using the file, create the shape you want, whether that’s rounded or squared. Next, apply a base coat and wait 5 minutes before painting on your color of choice. Do up to three coats, depending on the opacity of the polish. Finish it with a colorless top coat that will help the paint dry and shine. Nowadays, a great alternative are stick-on nails that can look just like a manicure. Or, if you’re brave, you can try applying a dip nail powder at home.

  10. Take a long relaxing bath/shower
As the poet Sylvia Plath said, “There must be quite a few things a hot bath won't cure, but I don't know many of them.” Create the steam room experience in your own bathroom by drawing a bath to soak in. Similar to a massage, relaxing in warm water can relieve muscle tension and boost circulation. Drop in your favorite bath salt or bomb for some added moisture and aroma. Maybe even bring a book and/or glass of wine.
